FOR POTENTIAL VOLUNTEERS
|
Volunteer helpers are a mix of medical, religious and "lay" people such as stay-at-home moms, college students, professionals, tradesmen and retirees. Primary helpers (those who have experience working with children with disabilites or who have traveled with ASCPG in the past) and secondary helpers are paired with a special needs child for the duration of the trip.
All interested people are welcome to apply for the pilgrimage. Helper applications (due September 30th) are subject to a background check and are reviewed by our organizational and medical staff, who will determine if he/she will make a suitable helper. All medical information on the application and discussed in person is held in the strictest confidence.
Once a helper has been accepted, he/she will be assigned to a child and will make several visits to his/her home to meet the family, learn about the care of the child, and become comfortable with each other. All helpers must attend a mandatory training session in the fall to learn how to care for your child and others in the group, and to understand what is expected of you throughout the duration of the trip. All helpers must have have a current passport.
While ASCPG raises funds to cover the airfare, insurance, room and board for the children, our helpers generously contribute $1,000 for their trip. Some helpers ask a friend, family member, parish, employer, etc. to sponsor all or part of their trip. Helpers are also responsible for purchasing an ASCPG t-shirt, sweatshirt, jacket and/or hat (up to $70).
